Is Stephon Gilmore's Return to the Carolina Panthers Imminent?

The Carolina Panthers are knee-deep in the NFL off-season, and while they have revamped their entire team via free-agent signings, they are still looking to make moves. The Panthers have "been in touch" with Stephon Gilmore to bring him back via Sheena Quick.

Lock Down the Gilly Lock

If Gilmore were to be brought in to boast the secondary that would be a Gamecock-filled secondary (with Gilmore and current Cornerback Jaycee Horn having both played college ball at South Carolina). That would be at least three former Gamecocks on the Panthers' defensive roster (Clowney, Horn, and with all hope Gilmore).

In addition, new general manager Dan Morgan said this about his new roster back at his introductory presser back in Feburary.

“We need some dogs. We've got to get some guys that are passionate about football, that love football. That want to come out daily and compete on the practice field, in the weight room.”

Stephon Gilmore would fit that criteria for being a “dawg” if he were back with the Carolina Panthers. The Carolina Panthers seem to be an active team in free agency, signing a multitude of players on offense, defense, and even special teams, re-signing both Ihmir Smith-Marsette and Sam Franklin Jr).

Carolina Roots

Gilmore isn't exactly a stranger to the Carolinas. Born in Rock Hill, SC, he attended High Pointe High School, the same school that Jadevon Clowney did as well, before both went on to become Gamecocks at the University of South Carolina. Then of course he spent a handful of games as a Panther in 2021 after beinging traded by the New England Patriots.
