2025 AMA Pro Motocross Recap - Washougal

Last week, we saw one of the great moments in American Motocross history, as Jeremy Martin went out on top, winning the final Moto of his career at his home track of Millville; quite frankly, a much-needed moment in what's been a relatively mundane season in the Great Outdoors. Sadly, things wouldn't get much better out in the PNW. Multiple high-profile riders are either taking advantage of the double bye week to recover or, in the case of riders like Jason Anderson and Cooper Webb, are done for the rest of the summer (Anderson for the rest of the year). So, did anyone new take advantage of the situation? Or did Haiden Deegan and Jett Lawrence hold serve? Here's how it went down.

Daytime Program/Injury Notes:

- ENOUGH with the 450s going first.

- Star Yamaha's Michael Mosiman was a late scratch after a leg injury in practice.

- 250 Fastest Qualifier: No. 1 Haiden Deegan (2:14.412)

- 450 Fastest Qualifier: No. 32 Justin Cooper (2:10.869)

450 Class Recap

1st - No. 1 Chase Sexton (Red Bull KTM) (1-2)

Saturday was arguably the best Chase Sexton has looked on a motorcycle in race settings this year. Getting a legit start out front ahead of Jett Lawrence proved to be massive, as it was the No. 1 that forced the No. 18 into a big mistake and not the other way around for once, which in turn was enough to give Sexton the overall win. Unbelievable moments in both of those Motos by the way, but the best guy certainly won.

More so than the Moto 1 rout, Sexton looked as good as I've seen him in quite some time in Moto 2 before the red flag. The pass around the outside of Hunter Lawrence with shadows aplenty was one of the more disgusting overtakes I've seen in years, and had things not paused, there was not a single doubt in my mind he was going 1-1 at that point. He'll take the 1-2, though, as the priority is to get into the best position in terms of SMX points.

2nd - No. 18 Jett Lawrence (Honda HRC) (3-1)

Despite leaving meat on the bone in that first Moto, if your bad day is a 3-1 in which you don't drop points to a single rider in title contention, then Jett has not much to complain about going into these final three Nationals. As far as clinching the title goes, Lawrence could do just that coming out of the break at Ironman if brother Hunter were to have something go wrong, but if not, he's more than on track to wrap this up at Unadilla.

14th - No. 70 Jorge Prado (Monster Energy Kawasaki) (8-19)

I mean, respectfully, what the f*ck was this? In Moto 2, Jorge Prado's five best lap average time was north of TWO SECONDS SLOWER than that of Mitchell Harrison, who, for the record, just picked up his season best result of 10th overall this weekend with PRMX Kawasaki. Setup problems aside, that's a BRUTAL look for a guy who was fantastic in the GPs these last few years. Any of that goodwill Prado built up at RedBud has been evaporated and then some. This was that bad.

250 Class Recap

1st - No. 30 Jo Shimoda (Honda HRC) (2-1)

The Jo Shimoda Agenda™ never sleeps, and neither does the man himself, making good on his post-Moto 1 promise to attack harder, doing just that and winning his second overall in the last three Nationals. Even with the seven-point loss to Deegan last weekend at Millville, he's still +3 on the Yamaha rider over the last three weeks. "We" will also not be subscribing to the "Wasabi Jo" name. "We" need something with more staying power.

2nd - No. 1 Haiden Deegan (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) (1-2)

A state-sponsored Deegan Propaganda video from NBC preceding Deegan's worst start of the season, which cost him the overall, feels right in my book. Not much else to say here, he did well enough picking his way up from around 7th to 2nd, but by that point, that was all he could've realistically done. His point situation is in the same ballpark as Jett's, perhaps a round behind schedule, but more or less the same.

5th - No. 83 Austin Forkner (Triumph Factory Racing) (5-5)

For as bad as the last two years have been (especially) for Forkner, his achieving his best result since the Detroit SX win last year was a truly great moment. No fluke here either; he was fast from the jump, qualifying in seventh, and then never ran lower than 10th. He has to be over the moon about taking an eighth and then a fifth into this two-week break, as he has every right to be. Additionally, for those keeping score at home, Forkner is 14th in the 250 SMX seeding, and given that he missed a pair of Supercross rounds and had some horrific outings this summer, is pretty solid. Never mind the fact he'll likely end up in the 11-13 seed range when it's all said and done.
