The NFL Combine is underway and teams are preparing for the draft. One of the questions that the New York Giants need to answer is whether should they draft a quarterback. The Giants have the sixth pick in the draft and general manager Joe Schoen says the team is looking at getting a quarterback, whether it’s through the draft or free agency.
“Where we are at six, we’re going to look at everything,’’ Schoen said at the NFL Scouting Combine. “We’re going to look at all positions. You hope you’re not up there again; you don’t want to be picking in the top 10, but it’s a good draft. It’s a solid draft across the board, and we’re going to have an opportunity to get a good player, and we’re going to evaluate all the positions and take the best player we can.’’
Schoen also said that he believes in current quarterback Daniel Jones. However, Jones shouldn’t be the franchise quarterback or the quarterback for the future. Jones has had mixed results as a quarterback and has a history of being injured a lot. This past season, Jones suffered a neck injury and a torn ACL. Big Blue must consider Jones’s injury history when looking at his future.
“The reality is he’s coming off three injuries in two years,” Schoen said. “That’s facts. It’s something we’ve gotta consider. We’re gonna address it through free agency and if there’s an opportunity in the draft — we’re gonna look at every position, not only quarterback because we do have needs across the roster.”
Even though Jones was given a four-year contract extension, he shouldn’t be Big Blue’s quarterback. Tommy DeVito has a good chance to be the Giants quarterback. DeVito is healthy and has performed better than Jones. Even if they made DeVito their quarterback, Big Blue would still need to draft a guy.
At the Combine, the Giants are meeting with Jayden Daniels and Caleb Williams, according to Ian Rapoport of NFL.com. Daniels and Williams are top quarterback prospects, and either one of them would be a better choice for quarterback than Jones. J.J. McCarthy, Bo Nix, and Michael Penix Jr. could also be an option for the Giants.
The Giants need to draft a quarterback because Jones needs to go, and DeVito could be the quarterback, but who knows if they want DeVito as their quarterback. At the very least, they need to add a quarterback for backup.
