2025 AMA Pro Motocross Recap - Southwick

Out of the first off-week of Pro Motocross this summer, we made it to the annual sandbox round of this Championship in Southwick, Massachusetts, and...yeah. Four more total motos are now in the books, and I can tell you with 100% certainty that they happened. Good motos??? That's up to you to decide, but here are some brief takeaways after round five.
Daytime Program/Injury Notes:
- Another flipped format due to NBC picking up the middle two Motos this week.
- The Coenen brothers did, in fact, not show up this week. I, for one, am stunned that KTM Europe didn't want Lucas to risk injury in the opposite hemisphere, only 32 points out of the MXGP points lead.
- As a Massachusetts native, the thought of Tony Cairoli doing a private test session in Springfield Mass might be the funniest thing ever (couldn't find a video, but it was definitely on his Instagram story on Friday). Very excited to see him on the Ducati these next two weeks.
- The role of "local rider who runs top 10" at Southwick was offshored this year to Norway's finest, Cornelius Tondel.
- 250 Fastest Qualifier: No. 1 Haiden Deegan (2:04.748)
- 450 Fastest Qualifier: No. 32 Justin Cooper (2:01.330)
250 Class Recap
1st - No. 1 Haiden Deegan (Monster Energy Star Racing Yamaha) (1-1)
The starts were absolutely everything today, and Deegan simply took a pair of perfect ones to two wins with a total margin of victory north of 34 seconds. No notes, no sidebars, just a perfect day at the office.
5th - No. 30 Jo Shimoda (Honda HRC) (10-2)
He obviously didn't win, but the grit and tenacity that Shimoda showed off, especially in Moto 1, was as welcome a development as any this weekend. He ran as low as 37th on lap two, yet came home in the top 10 while setting his best lap of the Moto with three to go, which is extraordinary - far more than the result sheet would indicate. No shame at all in that Moto 2 loss to Deegan while we're here. He kept him honest in the middle portion after the No. 1 pulled an early five-plus-second lead.
16th - No. 83 Austin Forkner (Triumph Factory Racing) (19-14)
Another rider with a wild Moto 1 was Forkner, who deserves some props for going from around 35th on the opening lap of Moto 1 to 19th. I'm not going to sugarcoat it; it's been a brutal 2025 for Forkner for the most part, but that's a small win that I think he should take some pride in.

450 Class Recap
1st) No. 18 Jett Lawrence (Honda HRC) (1-1)
What am I supposed to say at this point? Lawrence is somehow better this year than he was two years ago, and he's doing all this on a (very recently, relatively speaking) surgically repaired ACL. For better or for worse, these 450 Motos almost feel academic at this point, but you gotta tip your cap to the Australian in any case. Not exactly the typical management race here either. Lawrence was a full go from the jump both Motos. We also found out post-race that he isn't a big beer guy, so do with that what you will.
5th) No. 70 Jorge Prado (Monster Energy Kawasaki) (5-6)
While the falls in both Motos definitely hurt in the final tally, this was a night-and-day difference for Prado from pre- and post-bye. He was far more competitive off the rip, and he had some real-deal qualifying speed earlier in the day as well, going 2.5 seconds faster than the field in Q2. That first fall with Tomac running him down isn't exactly ideal, but he looked significantly better this week on the eye test, so I can give Prado a bit of a pass. Hopefully, this wasn't a one-and-done, given it was a sand track, because it hasn't been a particularly hot summer for Kawi on the 450 side to this point, otherwise.
